Methodological Recommendations for Developing Students' Functional Reading Literacy Skills

Synopsis:

The methodological recommendations were developed within the framework of the scientific and technical program "Development of Scientifically-Based Approaches to Improving the Content and Management of Secondary Education and the Scientific and Methodological Foundations for the Development of Higher Education" (2021–2023). The document is aimed at developing students' functional reading and mathematical literacy skills in grades 7–9. The recommendations are intended for teachers of subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, geography, history, computer science, self-knowledge, and others.

The development is based on an analysis of Kazakhstani teachers' perceptions and understanding of functional literacy, a study of the theoretical foundations of functional literacy, and a review of modern assessment tools. The framework documents of the international PISA study were used as benchmarks.
